Suspension Set Up (Real Life)

I know it depends on the track, ability etc etc but i was wondering if there is a genuine rule of thumb for set up.I know compression is how far it travels and rebound is how quick it returns, but i have been racing on a rough hard pack track with lots of holes and the bike is all over the place.I have been running soft comp and quick rebound and it is crap, i thought the rule of thumb was
Hard Pack = Soft comp/ fast rebound
Sand + Hard comp/ slow rebound
Any thoughts

To me these changes are so small I can hardly notice them, but when I set my clickers I never go 4 clicks away from the stock setting though. I know your not suppose to set the compression and rebound all the way hard or all the way soft as this can damage the forks and shock over time. Getting suspension re-valved and tuned for your weight is defiantly the biggest part.

you cant damge your forks by turing the clickers all the way.
but your suspension should be alot stiffer than you think. and when the back dances around its usually the front suspension being too soft.
